Private Adoption

Our adoption practice covers all aspects of private adoptions, including:

• step-parent or relative adoptions;
• foster care adoptions;
• inter-provincial adoptions; and
• international adoptions.

Children in Foster Care

We also specialize in assisting family members who wish to gain temporary custody of a child who is in foster care.  When children have been removed from their parent’s home by child protective services (Minister of Community Services) and placed in foster care, extended family members are able to request that the children be placed in their care on a temporary basis.  Where it appears unlikely that the children will be returned to their parents’s care, extended family members are also able to ask for full custody of the children. 

Having acted as legal counsel to the Pictou County Children’s Aid Society for over a decade, our lawyers have extensive knowledge on the various informal and court procedures related to seeking custody of children in care.
